Colour therapy Guidelines

Colour psychology refers to investigating the effect of colour on human behaviour and feeling, Colour psychology is an immature field of study viewed dubiously by mainstream psychologists and therefore qualifies as "alternative medicine". Critics view it as an overstatement of what can be justified by research, and point out that different cultures have completely different interpretations of colour.

Grey

Grey says security and reliability and is associated with self-reliance, self-control, and independence and can act as a shield from outside influence. Can relate to walling everything off, remaining separate, uncommitted, leading to loneliness and self-criticism.

White

Often associated with white is cleanliness or sterility. All round protection, bringing peace and comfort, help inner cleansing of emotions, thoughts and spirit. Alleviate emotional shock, freedom for time and space.

Black

Comforting, mysterious and protective. Associated with the infinite, silence, feminine life force, mysterious. But can prevent us from growing as we often cloak ourselves to hide ourselves from the world.

Red

Red strikes a chord with more cultures than many other colours because it’s intense, passionate and invokes an inherent physiological response. Associated with ambition and vitality, help overcome negative thoughts but also associated with anger, too much red might causes impatient, irritable and uncomfortable.

Blue

Blue is non-threatening, yet confident, stable and loyal. Cool, calming colour and associated with a higher part of the mind than yellow and represents the night and helps us feel calm and relaxed, mental control, clarity, creativity. Soft and light blue, protected from activity of day and alleviates insomnia. Midnight blue, sedative effect on the mind, helps to connect to feminine and intuitive side. Dark Blue can be depressive.

Green

Green says nature as well as initiative, It’s also the colour of spring, a time of rebirth and renewal, helping us to connect empathy to others and the natural world. Creates a feeling of comfort, laziness, relaxation, space and calmness, balance and soothes emotions, lessens stress. Lime/Olive green associated with envy, possessiveness and resentment and can effect emotional and physical health.

 Yellow

Yellow echoes the duality nature of red. Though yellow evokes feelings of happiness, intellectual side of the mind, expression of thoughts. Aids discernment and discrimination, clear thinking, decision making, memory and judgement, good organization, new ideas, to see different points of view, helps build confidence. when we are confronted with too much yellow, we become annoyed or angered.

 Purple/indigo/violet

Purple is the colour of royalty and wisdom, balances the mind of mental and nervous disorders, helps transform the mind from obsessions and fears. Transformation at a deep level, combating fear and shock, bringing peace, cleansing effect in emotional unbalances, associated with psychic protection. Violet, strong psychic influences, but person must not live in a fantasy world. Indigo, stimulates intitution and imagination. All colours are connect to artistic and musical, mystery, high ideas, creativity, inspiration, sensitivity, compassion, spirituality, sensivity to beauty and high ideals.

Orange

Orange is energy, enthusiasm, get-it-done and balance, releases emotions, alleviates self pity feelings, lack of self worth and unwillingness to forgive. Renews interest in life, stimulates the mind, anti-depressant, helps to lift spirits. Peach and Apricot is good for nervous exhaustion.

 

Brown

Brown, Mother Nature, mother earth. Alleviates insecurity, brings stability but can relate to emotions being bottled up, a fear of the outside world and narrow-mindedness, often stemming from lack of self worth.

Pink

Pink symbolizes innocence and child-like flirtatiousness and a tranquilizing color. Emotional calming and soothing, feeling of nurturing, warmth, lessens irritation, aggression, loneliness, over sensitivity, despondency, vulnerability, with a sense of protection and unselfish love.

Turquoise

Calming, cool and invigorating, good for tiredness, feeling washed out and mental strain, helps us to make a new start, heightens creativity, communication and sensitivity.
